Camp Highlight

Some of my highlights from Camp Keswick were swimming and going to the Agrodome. At the agrodome, we got to see all the different kinds of sheep and we even got to watch one get shaved. There all kinds of sheep's like the Merino and Drysdale. Merino was the biggest sheep there and he stood right at the top. I really wanted to see how long it takes to shave a Merino but if we were to shave the Merino, it would take 3 years for it’s fluff to grow back.

Another highlight of mine was the Luge rides! At first, when I saw people speed down the track I was really scared but then when I tried it myself, It was Awesome! There are three different tracks to go down Scenic, Intermediate and Advanced. I went down the Scenic track because it was my first time going down and I was really scared that I was going to crash, but then I went speeding down that track and I was having so much fun.

Netbook Reflection 2013

Having my netbook has help me alot with my work. It has been much easier working on my netbook and getting on the net. I have found it much quicker to complete tasks and hand them into the teachers on time. It has helped my learning more than when we had paper and pencil. I think that my learning has increased alot and I have developed a load of skills around google docs. Having a school email is much easier because you can ask your teacher online instead of getting up and asking them. At school we have a tracking my success and I have taken advantage of the opportunity to check it out myself. I have learnt more about decimals, percentages and fractions. Watching those linked videos have developed my maths skills by a heap, now I know way more about decimals, percentages and fractions. It has also helped me learn my basic skills on a website called Xtramaths and Maths Whizz. Netbooks are much easier to work with.

Highlight of this year

This year has gone so fast and it only feels like last week was when we got into our classes. When I leave this school, what I’m really going to miss are all the teachers, my friends and all of the memories we made her. It has been really fun being in Mr Barks and Mrs Nua’s class, having Mr Barks as a maths teacher and having Mrs Nua as a reading teacher. Throughout this year, I have made alot more friends and we are really close.

One of my highlight for this year was hanging out with my friends. What I’m really gonna miss are my friends. Even though we have had our ups and downs, we are still all very close. He has been awesome this year hanging out with them and I hope we will still be very close next year.

Another one of my highlights this year was learning alot of things that I didn’t know about. Mr Barks has helped me learn more about maths. Maths is one of my favorite subjects in school and sometimes I struggle with some questions but, Mr Barks is always there to help. Mrs Nua has help me alot with reading and I would just like to thank her alot.

My very last highlight of this year is meeting and getting to know all of the teachers such as Mrs Nua, Mr Barks, Mrs Squires, Miss Tito, Miss King and Mrs Lagitupu. I am really going to miss them all, they were all very fun in their own times and it was awesome hanging out with them at camp. I am going to miss alot of things about this school when I head off to college and I would just like to thank everyone who has helped us get this far. Thank you.

Future Aspirations

A bunch of people came to our school to help us think of what our future aspirations could or should be. Tristan Pang, 12 years old, in Ficino School and next year he is off to University. He was very inspiring because he was the same age as most of us and I could tell that his favorite subject is maths! Mosa Mafileo, I really liked his speech because he was telling us what went on during his childhood. He lived in a 3 bedroom house with 15 people living in it. It was really sad but, he found a way to help his parents by getting a job. His very last thing he said to us was, “If you have a dream go for it and when you run after it, catch it!”

All of them got me thinking, what I want to be or do in the future. Before they came, I wasn’t really thinking of what I want to be. I have thought very hard about what I want to be and that would be a police officer. There are many thing to think about like being a dentist, a doctor, a nurse, work for google or something out of your wildest dreams.

My friends, Brooklyn and Jasmine would like to be a videographer! She wants to travel around the world, videoing many different things like on 3 news. She has been practicing by videoing alot of things during school. Shoal, another good friend of mine would either like to work for google or in the music industry.

One direction

One direction is a British boy band created on the tv show, X Factor. Their names are Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson . They all auditioned separately and made it to boot camp. All 5 boys didn’t make it though but they got a second chance. They were all called back and became the group, One Direction! The boys made it into the top 3 but unfortunately they got eliminated. but, Simon Cowell was so impressed with the boy that he signed a contract with them. Their very first song was ‘What makes you beautiful’ and they reached up to 1 million hits or so.

DLO - Icosahedrons

First of all, the question is 'Zoe can make 18 cushions in 3 days. How many cushions can you make in 7 days?' I think the answer is 42. Reason being is because you have to find out 18 divided by 3 which is 6. So, to find the answer you have to multiply 6 and 7 which comes to the answer 42.

Next Step - Maths

In room 22, we have been assigned to chose what area around maths are we going to learn more about and accelerate in our learning. There were many to chose from but I choose Percentages, Decimals and Fractions. To help me accelerate in my learning in Percentages, Decimals and Fractions, I will watch the 'Next step' video on Teacher tool. These are the different kind of skills we are learning.

Reflection About Creative Strand

Yellow Hat - The things that I enjoyed were carving and painting over it. At first I was too scared to carve, but now I love doing it!

Black Hat - The things that I didn’t like were people mucking around and not getting enough time to carve. I also didn’t like how my hand kept cramping up, it was annoying!

Green Hat - Something interesting about this week was learning the names for all the different design.

White Hat - The thing that I learnt this week was how to carve curved lines. At first, I was going all over the place now I like doing it.

Hip Hip, HOORAY!

Monday 22 July 2013. That date specificity holds a special day and that day is my auntie Millie's birthday. It was very special because she was turning 21 and you only turn 21 once. " We are going to make her a big feast for her birthday!" my mum said as she had just come back from Pak'nsave. My mum pull savoury's, sausages, crab meat, chicken, vermicelli and pork out of the Pak'nsave bags. We sorted out the food and started to cook.

The kids were cleaning and the adults were cooking and everyone was doing something. It was meant to be a surprise but somehow, she figured out. Even though she knew, we still did it for her. Cooking and even more cooking, cleaning and even more cleaning, it was a very busy day. When we finally finished everything thing, we set up the tables and then she arrived with her friend, Shelly.

As she walked through the door, we all sang happy birthday to her and she smile. Then we all gave her a big hug and we started to eat. The food was going as fast as a cat running away from a dog and when it was finish, we got to the desert. For desert we had ice cream and a chocolate log. It was so delicious and I wanted more but there wasn't any more.

It was a very big and busy day so when the day ended, everyone went to sleep and had a good night rest. When it's your birthday, I wish you the biggest happy birthday anyone could ever give and hope you enjoy your birthday. Hip hip, HOORAY!

Bronwyn Brown

Bronwyn Brown. You may not have heard of her before but she studied food technology at Massey University. She came to our school to talk to us about sports and our daily life nutrition. The reason why is because this term we are studying about healthy food and being fit for life! Her job at Tip Top was all about tasting and creating new flavoured ice cream.

Now she works for Horleys (sport nutrition products). Her very first job was at Tip Top ice cream and she was involved in the development and launch of many ice cream products. She also worked for Fonterra which makes dairy products. This term, she came to our school and talked to us about her job at Horleys and the kind of food she works with. We really appreciated her coming to our school and we just wanted to say and very big ‘Thank You!’

Maths

At school, my favorite subject is Maths. I love to do maths because it involves number and for some reason I like working with numbers. My maths goal for next term is to learn alot more about decimals and fraction. Also with percentages so I know what to do when it comes to a question that involves these three things.

Should Pt England Be A Single Gender School?

Honestly, I think that Pt England school should be a only girls school. The reason why is because girls will be more focused on their work and they will be more confident to put their hand up and give an idea without anyone laughing. But the only bad thing about it is when girls cause dramas between each other and many fight as well.

If it was a girls school, the girls will be able to focus on their work and and support each other. There are more distractions in a co-ed school then a single school. It will be easier for girls to raise their hand and say what their thinking.

The only reason why it will be a bad school for girls is because the will be alot of dramas and gossip. People not minding their own business and people trying to get but into other people business. People causing fights for know reason and wanting to fight for know reason.

Prospective Student

My friend Brooklyn and I have put this together for you to read. Hope you enjoy.

Dangling precariously off the cliff the boy wonders to himself, will I make it?, or has my time come to an end? But with all his strength that he has left he pulls himself up onto the ledge. A slight of relief came across his mind but he also felt a feeling of anxiousness. Stopping to take a breath, in his sights he sees the karate dojo standing before him. His search had finally come to an end.

As he was walking up the steps, we could see the door. “Knock, knock!” The boy knocked twice. “SQUEAK!” The door slowly started to open and behind the door was the sensei. The boy saw the sensei and bowed not knowing what to do next. The sensei had pointed to his right and shut the door behind him.
The boy was very disappointed so he started to meditate to show the sensei that he was good enough to get into the school. After meditating for a day and a night, he finally knocks on the door again. The sensei opens the door and has the exact same reaction. Pointing to the side the boy gets rejected again.
The boy was very disappointed so he turned around and left the school. As he was walking, he looked down at the ground and his reactions start to change as he get more confident. He was so confident that he kicked the door open and wanted to fight the sensei.

As he was in his fighting stance, the sensei had pointed to the side on more time and he had finally looked to where he was pointing and saw a sign. “Please use side entrance”Looking very embarrassed, he used the side entrance and shut the door behind him.

Fractured Fairytale

Last week, we had to write a fairytale that we had made up ourselves. I had partnered up with 2 of my buddies which was Brooklyn and Ashleigh. Hope you enjoy

“Yeah! Wolf is here now. Lets get this party started” said one of the little pigs. They had invited their friends over to celebrate wolfs 21st birthday. Everybody was dancing and enjoying themselves except for one pig .He was sitting in the corner alone. His eyes started to drop and he fell asleep. He had a dream about the wolf being best friends with the pigs and that he would be all left alone. He quickly woke up and realised that no one was there. They had left him. A flicker of anger came across his eyes and at that moment he realized that he would be one of the pigs brothers but the wolfs worst enemy.

After the party, Little Red Riding Hood’s dad told her to take a basket to her grandmother. The basket was full of goodies but there was someone behind the tree who really wanted to have it, it was the  wolf. He had just finished coming from the three little pigs party and now he wanted Little Red. He followed her all the way to the middle of the forest until he saw the two little pigs and knew that there was something wrong.

After a 30 minute walk the evil pig had seen a little cottage and remembered that it was grandmas house. The pig knocked on the door loudly and when grandma answered the door. The pig ate her. He puts on grandma's clothes and jumped into her bed. Red Riding Hood opens the door and saw grandma on the bed. “Hey, grandma why are you so fat?” I ate alot when I was on the trip” replied Grandma. “Why is your nose so big?” “I had plastic surgery” said Grandma. “Why are you so pink?” “Just Give Me The Basket!” The Evil Pig Shouted “Ok here it is grandma” said Little Red Riding Hood.

Little Red knew something was wrong, “Knock Knock!” Someone was knocking on the door. Little Red opened the door and it was their friend, the wolf. “ Don’t give her the basket!!” he said, but it was too late. In the basket was Cinderella's glass slipper. All along the wolf wanted Red Riding Hood because she had mistaken his basket with  hers. .......... TO BE CONTINUED

Protein

Protein is essential for your body. For our task today, we had to describe what protein was and why it is good for us. We need to eat a balanced meal of protein each day to keep the immune system working and running properly. We need it to maintain healthy skin, hair, and nails. And to also help the body produce enzymes. Enzymes is practically in the body system to help break down your food into it's different cells.

Decimal Games

In room 22, we have been assigned to find a decimal game and this is the kind of decimal game that I have found. It is a adding game! Decimals are no different to any other number except that they are less than one. When I play this game, I just vision that the decimal point isn't there and I add it all up. Then I add the decimal point and it comes up with a answer.

The fun bit is when you have a go at trying to get it in the goal. If you do your points get higher and higher. Here is a link to the game. Soccer Game.

DLO Maori

Maori, what do you know about maori? Well, Serena and I didn't know much about the language until we came to Mrs Tito's class. She is our maori teacher and she teaches us alot about it. Hope you enjoy!

Kiwi Devastation

In Canada, on August 2010, 56 year old Peter Beckett murdered his 56 year old wife Lett Beckett and got charged for killing her the next year. Apparently, Lett Beckett had fallen out of a small boat and police say that at the time she was not able to swim and she didn't have a life jacket on. Former Napier Councillor Beckett, was caught in a bar abusing the rugby team, then said “Do you know who I am?”, right before slapping the team captain in the face.

Beckett was working as a bus driver at the time he got arrested.

Thanks to the help of Mary L for proof reading it and hope you enjoy.

WILL.I.AM

The big question was, ‘Who was the famous person coming to our school?’ Some people thought that it was our Prime Minister, John Key but, as soon as Mr Burt announced that the person who was coming  had musical abilities, then suddenly everyone thought twice about their guess. We were all eager and excited to find out who the mysterious VIP was?

It was time to assemble into the school hall and seeing all the media made this event seem very extraordinary. We were surrounded by video cameras associated with Tv producers who would have screened this event on NZ channels, we immediately thought “Obviously if there are a lot of cameras it has to be someone very special!’. Trying to keep still in our seats was very hard as our mysterious VIP was running late.

Our mysterious VIP had finally arrived at our school with prefects surrounding him. As soon as he entered the hall , it was a jaw dropping moment and it just felt so surreal for him to actually be here . The mysterious person  wasn’t mysterious anymore we all looked up Starstruck to actually see  ‘WILL.I.AM!! walking down the aisle  Yes, the artist from America whose album has recently gone platinum here in NZ and who is a member in the band ‘ Black Eye Peas ‘
WILL.I.AM kindly donated one hundred thousand dollars to our Manaiakalani Education Trust as a gift to support the schools in the Tamaki Cluster Zone. For us personally we are so thankful for his generosity to our school and for his inspirational speech he had spoken to us about. We really do wish him the best in his music career and god bless <3

My Auntie, Millie

Dark brown eyes, dark blonde hair, short and chubby, beautiful and always full of energy are the best thing to describe my auntie, Millie. Whenever you see her, she always has a big smile on her face. She is always energetic when all of her nieces and nephews are around her.

She is very unique in her own way, she is very loud when it comes cheering us on, very strict and grumpy if we do somethings wrong and enthusiastic when it comes to Sunday. The reason why is because she just loves to go to church, she love to meet up with her friends at church and practise singing. At church, she practices to dance and sing so that she can perform it at church!

I love to shop with her because she chooses the most beautiful clothes ever! If you ever want to go shopping with anyone she is the person to go with. I love learning how to play sports from my aunty but sometimes she can get a bit grumpy. But no matter what, she is still a very nice person. I like to go shopping and go to the movies with her because we get some very yummy treats on the way. That's all I can say about her.

Simile and Metaphors

This week we were assigned to make a presentation of what the differences are between a simile and a metaphor!

Alan Duff

Alan Duff, the guy who wrote the movie and book 'Once Were Warriors' and also the owner of 'Duffy books in homes'! It was an amazing experience getting to meet him and also get our very own books from him. He told us a bit about his life and that many of his book were based on his personal experiences. He is a very inspirational person and he also inspired us to read alot and take books can take you many places.

Fact:
- His book, Once were Warriors is based on a personal experience when he was small
- That he owns Duffy books in homes!

Passion of food

Love of food, a good attitude and passion, those are the three things that you need to have to be a great chef or baker. I love to bake with my mum because she has already experienced in her life. She has taught me as much as I no in baking and it all comes from when she was younger.

I always have a mindful cooking and baking while I’m at home. I search through the cupboards and look for all the ingredient, if I have it all then I ask my mum if we can cook or bake. I get my passion of cooking from my grandma because she has been the one helping me to cook.

Sometimes she even teaches me some of the traditional food from the islands. I think I get my passions of cooking and baking from my mother because she love to bake and cook just as much as I do. This is one of my dreams and I really hope that it comes true.

Lost in the Mist

This morning we all completed our first writing sample for 2013. I have posted it just as I wrote it in the 40 minutes that we were given, so that throughout this year I will be able to look back and reflect back on the progress that I have made in my Writing. I will post my learning goals from this soon

“Yeppy, were going to granny’s house today!” little Amy said as mum was trying to get her ready. Amy always loved going to visit granny especially on special occasions because granny gives her yummy treats! But Amy’s older sister Sophie didn’t like to visit granny’s house because the animals were too noisy and see could sleep!

“Come on girls, lets go!” mum said as she was heading out the door. Amy rushed down the stairs and into the car while on the other hand, Sophie was still getting ready and 20 minutes later she came down and hopped in the car with a frown on her face! A little while later they arrived at grans house and settled into their rooms.

Amy ran to see granny and gave her a big hug and a sloppy kiss, “I am so glad to see you granny!” she said while she was sitting in granny lap. Granny was as glad as she was and the sun was shining beautiful so they both went out to play and spend more time with each other. Sophie stayed up in her room and listened to music on her laptop.

As the sun was starting to fade away ,granny had to go and check on her animals down on the farm and as she counted all of her cows, 2 of them were missing! So she thought that they would come back the next day. The next morning, she went to go and check on the cows again, and now 4 of her cows were missing! They weren’t only running away, they were disappearing!

They went to town and put fliers all over and asked people if they have seen they but even ones answer was “NO!”. This was very bad but then she remembered her neighbor Dalice, was very jealous of her because she had won more trophies than she did in the farmers comp. It all started when granny won her first farmer comp and Dalice had never lost in that comp until granny came and took all the glory away from her.

So granny went over Dalice’s house and asked if she had seen her 4 missing cow and she answered with a big fat NO! Then granny could hear some cows out on her field and went to go and check. She counted all of Dalice’s cows and she had 4 more that she had before! “Dalice, I know you’re angry at me and I don’t blame you for it but did you steal my 4 missing cows?”

Dalice started to bust out in tears and said “I miss win that competition because thats when everybody knew me and now nobody knows me and when they see you, they know exactly who you are!”. But granny said “ Well, there is one person who knows you very well, ME!” So granny got her 4 cows back and granny and Dalice are very close friends now!

I am

This is a presentation about my family and I.

The Duffy show

“SCREECH!” I could hear a car pull up, I could see the trailer and guess what I could see on it, ‘THE DUFFY THEATER!’ I really like to watch the duffy show because it is very inspirational, it inspires you to read so that you can get better at it. I was very excited because every year they come and bring us a show that get the crowd pumping and cheering.

As we arrived in the hall, I could see many students sitting down getting to see the show. As they were beginning to start, everyone start to clap and cheer. First of all they introduced  each other to all of us and then got ready to show us their act. It all started with the two brothers, Duffy and Scruffy who were trying to find each other but they just kept going around and around in circles. Then finally, they found one another and started with a handshake.

Duffy told Scruffy and story of his and it was called ‘Duffy loses his words’, it all began when Duffy was fast asleep and he had a dream. He dreamt that this bad guy named Volt Charts had stolen some all of his words and the next morning when he woke up there were alot of things going wrong. “Hey look, I have two t-shirts, and they both have my name on them!” Remember that dream that he had, well that was no dream, he couldn’t read and he went to school with his mothers t-shirt on!

Then Duffy remembered about his dream and Volt Charts stealing all of his words then he heard a voice saying “If you want to get all of you words back then you will have to challenge me” So they had to challenge each other so if Duffy wins he get all of his words back and if Volt Charts wins he takes all of Duffy words and vanishes FOREVER!  After all, Volt Charts didn’t steal all of his word and instead of English, he used Maori!

In the end, Duffy won and all of his words were rushing back into his head. It was very inspirational and now, I love to read. When it was over, we all went back to class and still had a thought in mind of the duffy show. The show was very exciting and I hope that next year it is even better.

Beach After Beach

Seeing the lovely water every week was Awesome, getting to have a swim was even better! The past few weeks that have gone by have been very wonderful and had made my holidays Amazing! See how much fun my family and I were having at Maraetai Beach, it was so fun. Lets see what other beachs my family and I went to.

Maraetai beach wasn't the only shore that I've gone to this year. There were others like Pakiri Beach, Pt England Beach, Orewa, Goats Island and Mathason Bay. I jumped off the wharfs from Pakiri Beach and off the rocks of Point England Beach. It was so FUN!

I had alot of fun this year, even though it's a new year. Going to many beaches and having fun there was my favorite first memory for this year and I will remeber all of these moments. Every week, I had the feeling in my stomach that we were going to a beach and maybe, my family and I will be going to a beach tomorrow!
